Other Classifications of network

Type 1 (function based)

 As far as functional classifications are concerned , networks can be divided into 3 categories.

1) DATA network - transmits data.

2) VOICE network - transmits voice.

3) MULTIMEDIA network - transmits voice, images and video.

Type 2 (data forward based)

It has again got 3 categories 

1) SWITCHED network - point to point network.

2) SHARED network - using a hub network.

3) HYBRID network - combination of switched and shared networks.

Type 3 (ownership based)

Networks are classified in 4 categories on the basis types of owners.


1) PUBLIC network - used by all.

2) PRIVATE network - used by particular groups.

3) VIRTUAL PRIVATE network (VPN) - public network is used for private network access.

4) LEASED network - has dedicated leased lines .
